History

A revered Shakti Peetha of mithila

The Maa Tara Temple of mahishi is one of the most ancient Shakti Peethas of the mithila region. According to sacred tradition, this is the spot where Maa Sati’s Right Eye (in some beliefs Her “Netra” or “Tara”) is said to have fallen after Her Divine Body was cut by Lord Vishnu’s Sudarshan Chakra.
For this reason, mahishi is considered an Eye-Peetha Of Maa Shakti, making it one of the most powerful centers of Devi worship in north india.

Link to the Mahavidya tradition

Maa Tara, the Second of the Dasa Mahavidyas, is worshipped here in Her Fierce yet compassionate form.
In mahishi, Maa Tara is revered as:

  • The One Who Saves
  • The One Who Removes fear
  • The One Who Grants liberation (moksha)
  • The One Who Bestows divine knowledge

This region has historically been a seat of tantric sadhana, where sages and practitioners performed intense worship to receive Maa’s Blessings.

Mentions in ancient texts

The Mahishi Tara Peetha is referenced in several ancient and medieval tantric scriptures. It is believed that the spiritual energy of this Shrine predates even the Tarapith Shrine of bengal.

Many Saints of mithila performed Tara sadhana here, making it a renowned center for:

  • Mahavidya worship
  • Tantric meditation
  • Vedic rituals
