History
The Maa Tara Temple of udaipur is one of the most important Shakti Shrines of eastern india and is considered a highly sacred site within the shakta tradition.
Ancient origins
According to tradition, this Temple is believed to be a Shakti Peetha, where A Sacred Part Of Maa Sati’s Body is said to have Fallen. Different scriptures mention that Maa Sati’s Right Foot (or in some local beliefs, Her Eye) Fell at udaipur, making it a spiritually charged location for Maa Tara’s worship.
Association with the tripura kingdom
The Temple gained prominence under the rulers of the manikya dynasty, who were devoted followers of Maa Shakti. The early structure of the Temple dates back many centuries, but it was rebuilt and expanded during medieval times, strengthening its position as a major pilgrimage center.
Maa Tara in tantric tradition
In the Tantric Scriptures, Maa Tara is the Second of the Dasa Mahavidyas. She Represents:
- Protection from danger
- Liberation from fear
- Divine knowledge
- Compassion and salvation
The udaipur Shrine has long been a center for tantra sadhana, where sages and practitioners sought the Blessings Of Maa Tara on the banks of the holy lake.
Kalyan sagar lake significance
The sacred lake beside the Temple is home to rare species of turtles, which are protected as Maa’s Sacred Creatures. Devotees traditionally offer puffed rice to these turtles as part of their worship.
Present-day temple
The Temple today features:
- A red-and-white tripuri architectural style
- A peaceful campus surrounded by water
- A sanctum housing the divine symbol of Maa Tara, adorned with red, gold, and silver decorations
